Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. – Joel 2:32
On my way back from an on-campus Bible Study, I hurried through a yellow light to pass a busy street. But while I was right at the stop line, it turned red. I was at 35mph and there was a car right behind me trying to make through it too - obviously that was not a good time to slam on brake. So I ran the red light. 2 minutes later, a cop car was following me. I never even knew how they pull people over, so I could not tell whether he was trying to pass me, or trying to get me! I stopped on the side of the road; and the cop stopped behind me too, but neither passed nor came out to talk to me. Then I thought he just did not want to pass me because it was a single lane road. So I started driving again, and he honked at me. Then I knew he was trying to GET me. (Yes, that was how much I knew about driving at that time!)
Finally the cop came up to me: “What are you doing?” “Sorry, I do not know whether you are trying to pass me or stop me.” “I am pulling you over. Give me your license.” (As you can see, that was the first time I had been pulled over.) I was frightened when I realized that. As the cop took my license and went back to his car. I remembered a verse my pastor shared not long ago – anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, even if it is the last second. So I started praying: “Lord, I know this is almost too late, but isn't it said that anyone who calls on your name the last second would be saved? Please save me.” Then I remembered my advisor’s wonderful lesson on “How not to get a ticket while you have already been pulled over at 100mph” – basically you have to be very humble and answer every question by either “Yes sir” or “No sir”. Only after he is done with all his questions can you start to explain why you did that, beginning with a “I am very sorry, it is totally my bad, but...” So I did the same thing. The result? Of course I did not get a ticket
From this incident, not only did I learn by my own experience that God really could and would save us even if we called on His name in the last second, but I have also learned to always pray before I get on a road trip, specifically for “no cops and not tickets”.
